According to the USDA, the limited amount of supermarkets and grocery stores makes it hard for people to eat a healthy meal. Measuring food store access in a community and the multiple definitions of food deserts are a main focus for the Food Assistance Branch. We were given information to consider from Ms. Elizabeth Beaulieu which states “ The concept of ‘food desert’ may be defined using various distances from nearest food outlet as indication of food access level. The original food access measure is low income and low access at 1 mi (urban) and 10 mi (rural). Alternative definitions use different distances, or vehicle access; for example, the LI and LA at 1 mi (urban) and 20 mi (rural)”. They take the accessibility to healthy food, the family income, and the availability of public transportation into consideration.
